Paces

(LUIS and SELENA are sitting in a doctor’s office. LUIS is sitting on the patient table. SELENA is pacing the length of the office, and periodically checking the time.)

LUIS
Selena…

(LUIS watches SELENA walk to the door and pause with her back to him.)

Please come sit down, babe. I’m sure she’ll be in any minute.

SELENA
(SELENA takes a deep breath before turning around.) Fine.
(She plops down into the seat across from LUIS.)

LUIS
Thank you. (LUIS smiles slightly at SELENA.) See? Don’t you feel better now?
(SELENA is looking at the door impatiently.)
Hun?

SELENA
(Without looking away from the door?) Hmm?

LUIS
(LUIS hops off the table. He kneels in front of SELENA.) Look-

(LUIS starts coughing and rushes to the sink in the corner.)

SELENA
(Rushes to LUIS, and rubs his back as he throws up.) Aww, honey. I’m so sorry. I just hate seeing you like this. This woman just needs to hurry up and get here to tell us what’s up.
(LUIS groans before turning, and leaning his back against the wall. SELENA calmly turns the faucet on. She grabs some paper towels, and cleans LUIS’ face. She finishes cleaning up the sink, and turns the water off.)
Okay, sweetie. (SELENA wraps her arms around LUIS’ waist.) Let’s go sit down and wait for the doctor to get back.

LUIS
(LUIS takes a few deep breaths and sits up.) I’m good. It’s just sudden movements. I’m telling you… it’s probably just a case of motion sickness. I’ve seen it before. Doc will come in here. Tell me to drink more ginger ale. And refer me to some over the counter pill that will do the trick. No big deal.

SELENA
(LUIS leans back, so SELENA can no longer rub his back.) Babe, I’m worried about you. You’ve been having weird health issues for weeks now. I don’t know as much about medical garb as you, but I can’t help but worry.

LUIS
(Turns toward SELENA, and grabs her hands.) Selena, look. I love you. More than anything or anyone. And I love that you care about me. I feel so honored. I don’t think this is anything to be too worried about. It can’t be, right? Haven’t done anything or gone anywhere crazy. (A beat.) I’m just… I’m so glad you are here with me. I don’t know what I would do without you. (LUIS looks intently at SELENA.) Can you just promise me one thing?

SELENA
(SELENA looks worried and scared at the same time. She squeezes LUIS’ hands.) Anything. Of course. You know that.

LUIS
(A beat.) Okay. (A beat.) No matter what that doctor says, can I count on you to always be by my side?

SELENA
(SELENA pulls their joined hands into her lap.) Luis –

(Two light knocks sound on the door, interrupting the moment. SELENA’s attention immediately is turned to the door. In walks DOCTOR SMOOT with a clipboard and unreadable expression.)

DOCTOR SMOOT
Sorry for the wait. (She sits at her desk, and spins her chair to face LUIS) May I speak with you alone?

LUIS
(SELENA begins to get up, but LUIS grabs her hand.) No, she stays.

DOCTOR SMOOT
Very well. How long have you two been together?

SELENA
Six months next Tuesday.

DOCTOR SMOOT
(Nods to self.) So, (addressing SELENA for the first time) would you say that Luis has gained more muscle tone over the past two months?

LUIS
(Holds his hand up.) Lady, just tell us what it is.

DOCTOR SMOOT
(Takes off glasses, and sets on desk. Leans back, crosses legs.) Fortunately, you are not sick. Well… not with anything we can medicate. (A beat.) Did something happen about 3 months ago?

(LUIS stiffens, eyes widened.) Was there an incident?

LUIS
(Quiet and embarrassed) I was raped.

SELENA
(Loudly) What? Why didn’t you tell me? Is it an STD?

DOCTOR SMOOT
No, you’re clean.
(LUIS and SELENA look slightly relieved, but the tension is still evident.)
However, the timing was unfortunate, Luis. Your transition wasn’t at a stable enough phase yet. And this far into it, abortion is no longer an option.
